What is it Uterine Fibroids definition?

Uterine Fibroids

Your rules are more painful with stomach pains and bleeding amplified superabundant? The culprits may be fibroids, small masses in your uterus.

What is it?
They have the size of a marble and can appear inside the uterus (fibroids are submucosal then) in the uterine wall (intramural) or on the outer wall of the uterus (extra- wall).

Fibroids are tumors BENIGN: it is actually masses of fibrous tissue very hard and dense that grow even cells of the uterus, said Dr. Isabelle Girard, obstetrician-gynecologist and vice president of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Quebec (AOGQ). She illustrates this definition by comparing fibroids germs that make their appearance on the potatoes ...

The causes and impact
In fact, we do not know the factors behind fibroids. However, we know that estrogen promotes growth.

Experts and doctors also know that 30% of womb women shelters, many of them will never know, while some women, fibroids are not harmless. "Their appearance usually begins during the thirties and forties it is in their presence can be problematic. From the early fifties, they fade away, "said Dr. Girard.

Predispositions may be racial - black women are more likely to have fibroids - but also family: the possibility to have fibroids in her uterus is higher among women whose mothers had the same problem.

Symptoms and consequences
Much more abundant bleeding or irregular are the main alarm signal the presence of small uterine enemies. Can also suddenly feel stomach ache supported or backache.

During pregnancy
Pregnancy is characterized by surges of estrogen, which can trigger the rapid growth of fibroids. They are deprived of a normal blood supply: small "seed potatoes" can then be suffering from acute necrosis and subjecting the mother who is a carrier of stomach aches that resemble contractions in very rare cases.

As they are localized in the endometrium, submucosal fibroids may interfere with implantation of the fetus, said Dr. Girard, they raise and which is the nest in which the embryo is trying to implant. "They can also cause obstruction of the fallopian tubes by their presence in the cavity," says the gynecologist.

Intramural fibroids cause little damage in pregnant women, unless they are large, then they can be a barrier at the exit of the baby during childbirth.

Extra-mural fibroids do not risk during pregnancy.

Nonpregnant
Pushing up the menstrual wall (endometrium), the submucosal fibroids cause irregular bleeding or heavy. Intramural fibroids, which generally increases the volume during quarantine, cause increased bleeding, while the extra-mural fibroids can, by exerting pressure on the bladder or rectum, generate - although rarely - urinary problems or constipation, says Dr. Girard.

Treatments
Fibroids detected during pregnancy

It rarely occurs unless it detects complications related to the presence of fibroids and they are likely to recur in subsequent pregnancies. We then proceed to surgical treatment, myomectomy, but only after delivery.

Myomectomy can be performed by hysteroscopy (it requires no incision) is peeled and fragmenting the fibroid using an endoscope, a medical optical instrument for viewing the operation.

Laparoscopic myomectomy involves removing small tumors after practicing small incisions in the abdominal cavity.

Finally, we use the abdominal myomectomy to remove fibroids located inside the wall of the uterus. Then performed an incision in the abdomen and into the uterus.

Myomectomy is the only surgical treatment that allows women to preserve their fertility.
