What is high blood pressure?
High blood pressure (hypertension) means that the pressure in the body's arteries is higher than what is defined as normal. High blood pressure is not considered a disease in itself but is a stressful factor for heart and carries a risk of developing among other things, stroke and heart attack.

Blood pressure is indicated by two numbers separated by a slash. Over pressure is the pressure within the arteries (the arteries) when the heart contracts (systolic pressure). Under pressure is the pressure within the arteries between heartbeats (diastolic pressure). A blood pressure of 150/90 means that the pressure is 150 on the highest and 90 the lowest.
