Head nurses and supervisors supervise and coordinate the work of nurses, licensed practical nurses and other nursing personnel in providing patient care. They are employed in health care facilities such as hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and nursing agencies.

Main Functions
Supervisors and Head nurses execute some or every part of the subsequent functions:

  • Supervise the work of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and other nursing staff;
  • Assess the needs of patients and ensure that needed care is provided;
  • Establish and coordinate nursing and other health services;
  • Ensure the quality of nursing care and compliance with administrative procedures;
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures of the nursing unit;
  • Administer the budget of the nursing unit and ensure the availability of products and equipment;
  • Participate in the selection, evaluation and professional development of nurses;
  • Take part in research projects of nursing, medical and multidisciplinary;
  • Provide their own if necessary patient care.

Conditions of access to the profession

  • A university degree or college diploma or other approved program in nursing is required.
  • Courses in management courses such as Introduction to Nursing Management offered by the Hospital Association of Canada or any other degree, certificate or other studies in management or administration may be required.
  • Licensure as a registered nurse, is required in all provinces and territories on provincial licensure as registered psychiatric nurses, is required in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
  • From the clinical experience as a registered nurse is required.
