Federal requirements for nursing assistant

The certified nursing assistant is a nursing station entry-level nurses. CNA provide life-sustaining care to patients in hospitals, home-health care and residential. Certified nursing assistants provide the most routine care for patients such as taking vital signs, meal service, making beds and respond to calls from patients. They work directly under the supervision of staff in a nursing facility. As part of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987, the federal government has established regulations governing the training and certification of CNA students.

Certification and federal permits
Federal guidelines mandate that prospective nursing assistants planning to work in nursing facilities must attend a state-approved training program and pass a competency test. Programs approved by the State require at least 75 hours of training with 16 clinical hours supervised by the instructor. Training program for high school vocational programs, such as the American Red Cross and on-the-job training in the private formal training programs are available at technical and community colleges. Once the student passes the exam, the state is placed on a register of approved nursing assistant.

Additional requirements
In addition, some positions require high school diploma or wise, physical examinations and criminal background checks. Requirements vary by state, so you need to check the requirements of your particular state. Individual installations may also require their own workshops and training.

Continuing Education and Recertification
States differ, but most certifications are valid for two years. Nurses seeking renewal usually need to provide proof of employment and proof of continuing education units. Most facilities provide their employees with the necessary funds for training, but can also earn credits through programs sponsored by professional organizations.
