What causes DVT?
Many conditions can lead to the formation of blood clots in the deep veins of the legs. A particularly important factor is immobility, for example. Prolonged bed rest for another illness, after surgery or prolonged sedentary associated with long flights. It leads to stagnation of the blood and increases the risk of clot formation.

Some things can make you, particularly vulnerable:

Studied bone fracture, infection or surgery within the last four weeks

  • Previous deep-vein thrombosis
  • Cancer
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Use of oral contraceptives
  • Immobilization

Women and thrombosis
It is well known that birth control pills, especially in combination with increasing age and cigarette smoking increases the risk of blood clots. The pill should not be used in women with a history of blood clots, or where there are more cases of blood clots in the close family. Furthermore, hormon behanding during and after menopause increases the risk of blood clots. The risk is usually not increased in pregnancy, but with increasing age in pregnant women and possibly birth by Caesarean increases the risk.
