What causes angina?

Angina means tissue in the body is painful due to insufficient blood supply, and this may apply to all tissues in the body. On colloquially talk about angina chest pain, but this is therefore not entirely accurate. The correct term is angina pectoris - pain due to poor blood supply to the heart through the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that provide blood supply to the heart muscle.

The most common cause of heart does not receive enough blood, is atherosclerosis . Within professionals call arteriosclerosis, which in turn is usually caused by fatty deposits in the artery wall. Such fat deposits in blood vessels are often called plaque, and they may slow blood flow in vessels or in part. Another possible reason for the so-called unstable angina is "cramps" in blood vessels that supply the heart muscle. When this happens, the blood flow through these arteries so reduced that the heart does not receive enough oxygen and nutrients, and angina pain occurs. If this is the explanation for your chest pain, often called the condition "variant" or "Prinzmetal angina pectoris." This variation can cause angina pain at rest without there being any obvious trigger.

What factors trigger angina pain of heart?
If you have the facility to get angina, certain conditions in certain situations can trigger pain. This applies to physical exertion or exercise, emotional stress or exposure to extreme cold. All these factors lead to increased stress on the heart - it has to work harder and need more energy supply (including oxygen), ie increased blood flow. Another mechanism that can trigger angina pain is if your blood carries less oxygen than normal. Smoking or stay in the thin air at high altitudes can create this situation, thus it should be avoided.

The underlying causes that increase the risk of developing narrow blood vessels and angina, more, but some of them it is possible to affect:


  • High blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes are conditions that can be improved through a more active lifestyle and a lower fat diet
  • Smoking has a number of adverse effects - increases the risk for blood vessels to become clogged, and it also reduces the oxygen content in the blood. In addition, the nicotine in the smoke also increase the load on the heart
  • Small exercise predispose to atherosclerosis, and regular exercise seems to be very positive. Exercise corresponding brisk walking for 30 minutes 3-5 times a week reduces the risk of development, or the development of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries. Remember that any exercise is better than no exercise!
  • Stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamine also increased strain on the heart and is therefore harmful (and they have a number of other adverse effects)
  • Some asthma medications, diet pills (which will increase your metabolism) and some decongestants can also adversely affect the heart
  • Factors that are unable to do anything with, gender (men are more at risk), age (the risk of heart problems increases the older we get) and heritage (that close relatives have heart disease also increases the risk that you can get it)


In other words, it is never too late to switch to healthier living habits, but the sooner you submit to a health beneficial lifestyle, the greater the rewards!
