Gas Gangrene: Definition
In general, the process is gangrene due to a stoppage of blood flow to a tissue, causing necrosis (death) of the latter, and usually locating members (mainly lower). However, gangrene of a viscus is also possible (lung, intestine, liver, etc.).. Gas gangrene Lightning also called gas or gasifies is the complication due to infection by bacteria like Clostridium perfringens Clostridium septicum (among others), destroying (mortification) tissue quickly consuming and producing a large amount of gas having a deleterious effect upon the body. It is characterized by an impairment with serious consequences for the body moving usually pejoratively to the patient.
Gas gangrene is hardly observed now, except in time of war, or after contamination of wounds by soil or dirty instruments. Diabetics are particularly susceptible individuals to infection; they should fear this type of pathology.
Gas gangrene is caused by infection by anaerobic (not requiring oxygen to live), especially those belonging to the genus's Clostridium. The multiplication of bacteria produces a large quantity of gas that smell is nauseating and dissemination to the skin important. This variety of gangrene is seen primarily after a lesion from the skin or mucous membranes (protective layer of cells of a hollow organ) or after an incident during surgery.
Gas gangrene: Classification
There are many varieties of gangrene (dry gangrene, wet gangrene, gangrene milky (white), Fournier's gangrene, gangrene curable lung (Lasegue gangrene), also called acute dermal gangrene, necrotizing fasciitis, gangrene lightning gas gangrene hospital gangrene symmetrical ends appearing during Raynaud's disease, etc.).
Gas gangrene: Symptoms
Incubation period (time between contact with germs and the onset of symptoms) for 18 to 36 hours local pain very important asthenia (severe fatigue) State Weakened patient with shock:
* Tachycardia (rapid heartbeat)
Fall in blood pressure
Decrease in amount of urine or abolition of urination
High fever
* Gradual onset of coma
Gas gangrene: Consultation doctor
On palpation, the doctor finds the presence of gas in the tissues (crepitus gas).
Gas gangrene: Evolution of the disease
The prognosis of gas gangrene is very reserved.
Gas gangrene: Treatment
Frequent wound care, appropriate and rigorous administration of antibiotics along with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (administration of oxygen at high pressure) excision of necrotic tissue.
