Natural Family Plan Fertility Awareness Method

Natural Family Planning, abbreviated NFP is a set of methods of birth control, also called standard methods of birth control, or "common methods." NFP is to abstain from sexual reproduction (vaginal intercourse) during the fertile period of the menstrual cycle to avoid pregnancy, or increase sexual activity during this period to increase the chances of conception.

Ways
The methods vary in the way to determine the fertile period.

The methods of self-observation
Main articles: temperature method, Billings method, Fertility Care and ovulation tests.
Methods of self-observation based on the collection of information from signs of fertility:

  • the basal body temperature, which increases during ovulation temperature method;
  • vaginal secretions (especially mucus)
  • simple doable even by illiterate populations, already widespread in the world: Billings method;
  • more scientific method, requiring more training: method Fertility Care;
  • the position of the cervical, observable self-examination,
  • the ovulation tests.
From these signs, we are capable of pinpoint the fertile period of the cycle. Unlike the calendar method, based on a probabilistic calculation, observation of fertility signs is reliable: whatever the cycle, we are able to accurate detect ovulation.

If sympto thermal method is used correctly, the likelihood of unwanted pregnancy ( Pearl Index ) is 00. , by around 1 IP studies Freundl and his group.

The calendar method
The calendar method, sometimes called method Ogino and Knaus name of its creators, is based on the observation of the length of the last cycles. It is the oldest and least efficient methods of natural family planning. There was the consensus to discourage the use unless no other method is possible.

Calculate the fertile period predicted by the calendar method as follows:

  • First day of the fertile period = 10 + length of the shortest cycle observed during the last 12 cycles - 28;
  • Last day of the fertile period = 17 + length of the longest cycle - 28.

The method is based on a principal probabilistic: the period of the cycle is usually the not fertile period, so the probability of being prolific between these two dates is low. However, its simplicity is its weakness. Indeed, in reality, the fertile period may well be outside the predictions of the calendar method. The likelihood of unwanted pregnancy is quite high: the Pearl Index is 9%.

The method of breastfeeding and amenorrhea
The method of breast -feeding and amenorrhea method (LAM) is based on the physiology of breastfeeding. It is intended for the new parturient.

LAM requires the observation of three criteria:

  1. a woman is amenorrheic: it has not had menses since delivery;
  2. it fully breastfeeding her child, who receives no other food for six feedings per day at least;
  3. delivery took place there less than six months.

If these three criteria are met, the probability of pregnancy ( Pearl Index ) is of the order of 2% for the first three months.

Choosing the sex of the baby

The choice of the sex of the baby is more or less practiced by region of the world, and may also be important in the case of genetic diseases that are transmitted primarily has one or the other gender. A team in New Zealand has shown that accurate identification of ovulation through the fertility index (temperature and cervical mucus ) can be used to schedule reports and increase the chances of having a girl or a boy. The chances of having a boy seem higher if the design has more than 48 hours before ovulation.

Effectiveness of different methods

The Dr. Barrett and Marshall have shown that without planning reports, the chances of pregnancy are 24% per cycle. The same study indicated that the chances of pregnancy reach 68% chance per cycle when intercourse takes place during the fertile period as detected by the temperature curve.

The use of the Billings method provides results similar or even higher if intercourse takes place the day "optimal." There are ovulation tests to detect the date of ovulation and therefore, plan intercourse in order to conceive.
