What is superficial phlebitis?
Thrombophlebitis is an inflammation of a superficial vein (the blood vessels that carry blood back to heart). In a limited length of the vein (a few centimeters) is inflamed vessel wall and inside the blood vessels form a blood clot (thrombus).
A superficial phlebitis is usually a benign disorder that is often seen in connection with varicose veins (varices) 1.
The condition is not uncommon and is found in studies to occur in only 10% based on life 2. Average age is 60 years, but it is lower for women, who constitute 55-70% of cases 3.
