Nursing Education
Studies in nursing, although they differ among countries in their terms last for about three years and must alternate theoretical and practical training.
Access to the nursing profession
In Quebec, access to the profession of nursing is twofold:
- five years of secondary school, three years in CEGEP (college) to lead nursing diploma nurse technician. To obtain the right to practice, students must pass a test and practical (ECOS) of the Order nurse. As a nurse technician, the professional can specialize in a DEC-BAC (equivalent to the degree level) integrated into nursing for two additional years at the university to become a graduate nurse (or clinician).
- five years of secondary school, two years of college in science and three years of Bachelor of Nursing at the University. Thus, the student has direct access to diploma graduate from nurse (or clinician).
The nurses receive extensive training since 1950.
In Quebec, nursing academic progress is as follows, after six years of elementary and high school five years:
- Course of nursing assistants had their own professional (OIIAQ):
- Nurse technician course from the College of Nurses of Quebec (OIIQ):
professional examination of the Order for obtaining licensure

2 years of university studies at the Master of Nursing (Master)
Options: training, management, consultant specialist care practitioner
- Course of Doctor of Nursing attached to the OIIQ:
Four years of university studies in doctoral programs in nursing (PhD or Professional Doctorate by University).
Total possible route of development:
Three years of technical care, three years of Bachelor of care, control two years and four years of PhD.
The total formation of a doctor of nursing in Quebec up to 12 years.
Access to education
In Belgium, there is no competition in order to integrate a school nurse since you have to have the high school diploma or its equivalent.
Registration is done frequently during the open days of nursing schools or on request from the Secretariat of the chosen school.
Education
A young student nurse
Studies in schools of nursing last three years. The courses represent 25% of the first year, 50% the second year and 75% the third year. Students are assessed by continuous monitoring: an average of 12 (not 10 as in France ) and a minimum of 10 in each subject is required to move from one year to another.
Two types of studies allow access to the nursing profession: the Bachelor and the patent.
- Bachelor: The Bachelor, in three years, is open to students Belgian holding a diploma of higher secondary education or the holders of bachelor who obtained equivalent. It allows many specializations and access to the Master of Science in Public Health and combines theory and practice.
- Patent: the patent is more restrictive and is accessible to students from higher vocational education. The emphasis is on practice.
Graduation: Students must pass their practical and theoretical examination and complete a Work Study End (memory) .
