A stroke occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is reduced or ceases. The area of the brain not getting enough blood, are destroyed. It can occur when a blood clot closes, blocking, one of the brain's arteries (blood vessels). It can also happen as a result of an artery burst and bleed into the brain tissue. Depending on the number and extent of the brain that has been impaired blood supply, a stroke can be mild to severe.
A stroke can, for example. Cause problems with
- Impaired mobility due to paralysis
- Impaired sensory
- Loss of vision
- To think, understand or communicate - that is, speak, read or write.
- Changes in behavior and emotional disorders, eg. Depression
