Blood clots in lungs condition
What causes the condition?
Pulmonary embolism usually occurs after it has formed a blood clot in the large veins in the legs or pelvis. Blood clots in the legs normally occurs when you are sitting still for long, by bed rest and after injury. The blood in the legs "pile up" and become stagnant, and this predisposes to clot of the blood.
If all or part of the clot breaks away, carried it with blood flow to the heart, where it is pumped to the lungs. Blood vessels from the heart to the lungs become narrower and finer and sooner or later plug jamming, forming a pulmonary embolism.
Several things make you more prone to develop pulmonary embolism:
- Prolonged bed rest
- Previously, blood clots in the legs
- Broken bones in the legs or pelvis
- Heart Failure
- Obesity
- Surgery in the abdomen
- Cancer
- Pregnancy
- Birth
- The pill
- Hereditary blood disorders
