Lymphedema Facts
Lymphedema is caused by reduced transport capacity of the lymphatic system. This means that the lymph will seep into the tissue and cause swelling.
There are two types of lymphedema, primary (inherited) and secondary (due to underlying disease) lymphedema.
Lymphedema is a permanent condition, and there is no curative treatment.
The main treatment is performed by massage therapists with special training, use of elastic bandages and stockings, careful skin care and antibiotics for flare-up of skin infections.
